5 Dark Comedy Gems That Came Out Of Hindi And Tamil Cinema

Several Hindi comedy movies as well as Tamil comedy movies tend to be in a league of their own as they do not necessarily conform to the predetermined unwritten rules for a comedy film. For example, instead of going for family friendly slapstick gags, some of these comic capers make topics such as infidelity or excessive use of narcotics the basis of their gags. While some films, on the other hand, make the fake death a character as a root of the same. We will explore a total of five such Hindi comedy movies as well as Tamil comedy movies that are esoteric and quirky, to say the least. Perhaps you will find something in this list that tickles your fancy. Read on to learn more.

1)  Kaalakaandi (2018)

The first in the list of dark Hindi comedy movies is Kaalakaandi. This Saif Ali Khan-starrer is perhaps the most experimental project that the actor has been a part of. This film sees Saif Ali Khan’s character, Rileen, finding out that  he has stomach cancer and only has one month to live. The interesting part is that he is a teetotaller and is as clean as a human can be. After his harrowing discovery, Saif Ali Khan breaks off the metaphorical chains and decides to live life to the fullest by consuming A-grade narcotics. This film is essentially a collection of stories that have been stitched together in Love Actually-style and collectively have the vibe of a drug-fueled The Bucket List. This movie can be seen on Disney+ Hotstar.

2)  Blackmail (2018)

This movie, featuring the late and great Irrfan Khan, is perhaps the most audacious project that the actor has been a part of. This film, which was also released in the same year as Kaalakaandi, is a convoluted and mind-bending tale of a man who finds out that his wife is cheating on him. As a result of the same, Khan’s leading man weaves an intricate web of lies and blackmail in order to effectively torture his wife and the man she is cheating on him with. This movie can be streamed on YouTube for a fee.

3)  Brij Mohan Amar Rahe (2017)

This absurdist comedy film is the tale of a man who fakes his own death in order to get off the radar of a certain group of people with nefarious intentions for him. But some time later, the lead character, who ends up assuming a new identity, gets booked for killing himself. What this premise leads to is a feature full of twisted hilarity and endless possibilities. This movie can be streamed on Netflix.

4)  Kolamaavu Kokila (2018)

The first on the list of dark Tamil comedy movies is this Nayanthara starrer. The movie in question is about Nayanthara’s titular character, Kokila, and her attempt to have a more stable financial situation by selling drugs. Eventually, the film becomes complicated as the lives of Kokila and her family are upended by an internal drug war, which paves the way for a myriad of dark comedy sequences during the third act of the film. This feature can be streamed on ZEE5.

5)  Moodar Koodam (2013)

This film perhaps has one of the most unexpected twists ever written into a Tamil dark comedy film. The story is about a group of friends who hatch an elaborate plan to rob a wealthy businessman, only to find out that the businessman’s display of wealth is nothing but a show. Although it may appear like we have spoiled the film for you, the real dark comedic gems are actually a part of the sequences that see the group in question formulate the plot. This movie can be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar.
